Composite Decking Basics
Traditional Wood Deck
Traditional lumber decks are still an attractive option for homeowners, however the appeal fades as quickly as the wood does. Without frequent maintenance our coastal conditions quickly cause wood decks to splinter, warp and/or cup—and this can happen within the first few years.
Typically wood decks are surfaced with either pressure treated or cedar boards.
Composite decking is made of plastic and wood fibers. When compared to wood, it’s more resistant to the elements, splinter free, and low stress. With composite decking, there’s also no need to seal or stain your deck like with traditional lumber.
TREX uses this technology for it's deck products.
Capped Wood Composite
With the look and feel of traditional wood and the added strength of a composite, capped wood composite decking is a premium replacement to pressure treated lumber. The boards’ core is made of tough composite materials and surrounded on all four sides with a protective cap. It’s a high-end look with added strength at a competitive price point.
AZEK decking and TimberTech Legacy, Terrain, Tropical Collections offer this technology.
Deck Materials Comparison...courtesy AZEK/Timbertech
- Ground mounted decks should be supported on 4x4 posts sitting on top of concrete pier blocks. These posts may also be installed by digging suitable holes and then filling the space around the post with concrete. Supports should be every 6-8 feet, and at a minimum at every corner and where stair risers are located. Composite decking should not be installed in direct contact with the ground.
- Decks significantly above ground level may require special Engineering to make sure any supports or modifications made to the supporting structure are sufficient to carry anticipated loads. Bandon Supply carries all the dimensional lumber you'll need to build almost any kind of deck - stop in the store for assistance.

- 2x6 lumber is suitable for spans of 8-10 feet. Stop by the store for assistance with material selection for your deck.
- AZEK/Timbertech decking is engineered to be used with conventional 16" on-center framing.
- All composite decking expands and contracts with temperature. Install your deck when outside temperatures have stabilized. Avoid installing in extreme cold or hot conditions.
- Depending upon the deck profile selected you may be edge fastening or surface fastening deck boards to the support structure. For surface fasteners pre-drill prior to installing the screw to avoid dimpling the deck surface.
